Only Matthew 2:1-12 tells the story of what is commonly referred to as the visit of the three Kings. But, the word king is never used to describe these visitors. King is only used in reference to Herod. The Bible refers to them as Wise Men or Magi. Lets just say these guys were important. We make some assumptions as we strive to interpret the story. Where were they from? Why did they come? Who told them to go to see Jesus? Truth is, I don't think it really matters. We just need to know that they did exactly what they were supposed to do. Please read the Magi's story.
I was struck by the fact that these Wise Men or Magi, traveled up to two years to find Jesus. Imagine leaving your homeland, kingdom, family, in the care of someone else for 4 or more years. Now the Bible doesn't say this. Reason tells us that the Magi or Wise Men would travel as quickly as possible to reach their destination. We know that Herod ordered that all the male children two and under had to be killed, hence two years till the Magi found Jesus. They then had to return a different route to avoid detection by Herod. So, reason again tells us it probably took them longer to return home since they would be traveling, to avoid Herod, after being warned off by a dream. Would we have that kind of drive, ambition, desire, and love to make it all happen, just to deliver gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh? The common reference to three kings mostly comes from the three gifts given to Jesus, as they were expensive items and not handed around thoughtlessly. The gifts themselves had significance but not necessarily the most important part. Of course Magi or the Wise Men were of importance and would not have traveled alone. The important part is, they were successful, because God was completely in control and they followed His command.
I have trouble planning a week long vacation. Have to get someone to get the mail, water the plants, pick the garden...Can you imagine leaving and really not having much of a clue where you were going or how long it's going to take you to get there? You just needed to follow a star. And, again not having a clue how long you would be gone, the Magi had no idea beforehand that they would need to return a different way. I would have failed miserably I'm afraid. I like plans. So very thankful God did all the planning and led their way and they listened without fail.
These twelve verses bear witness to the steadfast faith of these Magi and all who travelled with them. Oh how miserably I fail everyday. But, God's gift of love, sacrifice of his only Son, his mercy and grace, I can try again and again each new day to do better than before. So, who were the Magi? They were men whom God knew would not fail and they were faithful in their journey.
So I leave you with the last song for this week. I bet you think it's "We Three Kings"? but I decided not this time, Enjoy "Oh Come All Ye Faithful". The lyrics seem to fit this story too.(Click the Link)

They were Persian astrologers which is now Iran.
Thank you, makes you have to think about that scripture, well done.
Never thought of it that way and you are so right about when we leave home ,especially me!!
I asked the Lord to help me every day to do better today than l did yesterday. I find it is so much better to let him lead me forward. I guess that is why l really don’t plan anything . If it comes to me , and it sounds good l do it. I never know what tomorrow will bring, but l do know God will be there for me.
