We Don't Know Persecution

“Happy are people whose lives are harassed because they are righteous, because the kingdom of heaven is theirs.” Matt. 5:10 (CEB)
I have been reading a book entitled, “When Faith is Forbidden – 40 Days on the Frontlines With Persecuted Christians” by Todd Nettleton – and let me tell you we don’t know persecution! This book contains true stories of the author’s visits with Christians in hostile nations such as Iran, Turkey, Jordan and others.
We may have experienced taunting and teasing about our faith, we may have had people tell us plainly they don’t believe and others that may have let us know they just weren’t interested in our Jesus, but the people Mr. Nettleton visits and whose stories he relates are threatened by prison, having their homes destroyed and yes, sometimes death. We don’t know persecution!
I have only gotten to Day 6 in my reading, but already the stories contained in his book have opened my eyes and have tugged at my heartstrings. I keep thinking that I have it so easy and amidst all their problems and threats each account speaks to how that person has forgiven, extended mercy and love to their provokers. Each day thus far, indicates the person has maintained their joy in the circumstances they find themselves. We don’t know persecution!
In our church we light a candle every week for the persecuted church. We must remember these brothers and sisters in Christ in prayer each day. Their sufferings are things we can’t imagine!
This devotion is a little different, but I just felt led to share it with my readers and I would encourage you to read this book. It has definitely opened my eyes, and again, we don’t know such persecution. As these Christians face volatile situations each and every day, they are leaving a legacy for Christ.
Turning to the last page in the book I found the author asking the question, “what do you want your spiritual legacy to be? What will you do today to add a brick to the spiritual legacy you intend to build?” I find those very deep and thought provoking questions and we need strength and courage which can only come from Jesus to accomplish this.
In closing, I am including Mr. Nettleton’s final prayer (one follows each story) and encourage each of us to make it our personal prayer.
Lord Jesus,
Strengthen and empower me to live for You in such a bold way that it will make a difference for years to come and in eternity through the lives of people You touch through me. Help me build my legacy, day by day, action by action and conversation by conversation as I represent You and Your love to all those around me.

Great devotion and a great reminder of just how much our faith is hated in some parts of the world. Good job!
Oh Lucy I can’t wait to read the book. Not because it sounds like a fun read but because I too need to be reminded what a privileged like I have had. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for this devotion. I wish everyone could visit at least one foreign country, to then evaluate what a privilege is to live in the usa and be a Christian. Amen
