Vessels of Honor

But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honor and some to dishonor.”  2 Timothy 2:20 (KJV)

Our pastor referred to this passage in a sermon he recently gave.  He used the term I have chosen as my title, and I like the way it rang in my ears.  Vessels of honor; who wouldn’t want to be considered as such?  A vessel highly favored by the master of the house; a special piece set apart.  Imagine if you will your grandmother’s fine china.  Certainly it holds a place of honor and is kept in a place that has been chosen just for those beautiful pieces.  On the next shelf perhaps, there is a less desirable piece; not as pretty and definitely not fine china.  Keep this picture in your head as you read on.

Paul was using vessels of gold and silver, wood and clay to paint a picture for Timothy in this letter.  Paul points out for Timothy things to avoid in his life in order to become one of those vessels of honor in this passage.  The person who cleanses himself of the things mentioned by Paul; gossip, youthful lusts, foolish speculations and quarrels, can become a vessel of honor.  We see in verse 21 this explained: “If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.” (KJV)

The great house is the Kingdom of God, we are the vessels.  Jesus is the master of the house.  Are we allowing ourselves to be used as vessels of honor that are useful to our Master and prepared for every good work?  I found this sobering statement from www.gotquestions.comAll believers in Christ can be vessels of honor if they simply heed Paul’s direction. It is a sad fact that some who believe in Christ will fail to cleanse themselves of dishonorable things and may in fact be vessels of dishonor, not useful and not prepared.

I want to be found to be an honorable vessel, so there’s work to do!  Pray this prayer with me:

I thank you my Father for opening the doors of your house to me. As I am a joint heir with Christ I am now a part owner of the house too. What a privilege!

By your grace I will be a vessel of gold in Jesus name. I pray wherever I am, I will be a vessel of honour. As I lift your name up, many will be drawn into your House in Jesus name. I pray that every plan of the devil to cause me to act in a dishonourable manner will always fail in Jesus name. I will live a life of continuous victory in Jesus precious name. Amen
