Matthew 6:19-21
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure in there will your heart be also.”
When we take our last breath and our soul leaps to heaven, what will we take with us?
What will we lay at our Savior’s feet?
Our house?
Our car?
Our new pair of jeans?
The stuff we’ve collected over the years?
Money, phone, greater things?
Do we even know what these verses mean?
Imagine a beautiful chest arraigned with the finest of jewels.
Empty, waiting to be filled.
A chest bound for Heaven, but it can’t get there…only what’s inside.
Take a moment-breathe.
Close your eyes.
What will you place inside?
What Heavenly treasures do you possess?
What treasures will be waiting for you as you enter the promised land?
A worn and tattered bible? No, but the words on the pages, yes!
Your students in Sunday school? No, but the lessons taught over the years, yes!
A friend in need? No, but your kind words of encouragement, yes!
The person you held the door for? No, but the simple act of kindness, yes!
The beggar on the street corner? No, but the prayer you prayed for him, yes!
The church you attended? No, but the hours you spent there in song, prayer and worship, yes!
The person you lead to Christ? No, but the soul that was saved, yes!
Once such things have been added to the beautiful chest, moth nor rust will be able to destroy them and there will be nothing to steal. It will all be safe and secure in Heaven. When you get there, God will reward you for everything inside.
Do not delay. Start today! Fill the chest and watch God as He blesses you beyond measure. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Treasures we take …. Indeed thoughtful and a reminder of where ones focus should be.
Wow, Kathy. I love the way you expounded on this verse. Your suggestions of the treasures we can lay up in heaven are so like the list we made in my 5th grade Sunday School class which I alluded to in my response to Lucy’s post. And as I reconsider this verse this morning, I recognize it as a command, rather than a suggestion or admonition. May we serve the Lord, in this way, with gladness.
What a beautiful and perfect way of describing our treasures in heaven. You have a special way with words.
I really enjoyed reading this. It is something we need to be reminded of often. It is good to have all the different things we have, but what a great feeling it is when we pray for someone or help someone. Serving God , and believing is relieving ! Have a blessed day and God bless you all.
Love this poem! Very thought provoking!
