Throwing Rocks

Our little grandson just loves to throw rocks into the pond. He is just as pleased with a small splash as with a big one. With each rock he picks up, he looks up at me and says, “rock” to which I reply yes again and again. A few days ago we had a couple of really pleasant afternoons so Bryson and I ventured outside and sure enough we ended up sitting in the grass throwing rocks. The problem was we had to constantly search for rocks! We gathered up a few small piles along the bank of the pond and eventually every last rock was in the water.
Being a rock gatherer all afternoon set me to thinking about how Jesus is our rock. Unlike having to continue searching for and collecting rocks each time we depleted our throwing supply our Rock is everlasting! This truth is found in Isaiah 26:4 “Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord is a rock for all ages.” (CEB) Once you have placed your trust in Jesus as your Rock, it is done. If we rest on the foundation that is Christ then as we sing in the old hymn, On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand, His oath, His covenant, His blood support us in the whelming flood!
We don’t have to run to and fro trying to gather up enough Jesus to throw into our days. His death on the cross was a one-time sacrifice. 1 Peter 3:18 is one of my favorite references to this truth: “Christ himself suffered on account of sins, once for all, the righteous one on behalf of the unrighteous.” (CEB). In addition, once we are saved by grace through faith, we are saved! No question about it. We must confess our sins but the promise to our confessions is that they are forgiven and forgotten forever.
I don’t think I will pick up rocks ever again that I am not reminded of this truth.
Are you standing on that solid rock today? Once you have committed to stand on the Rock, you won’t need to search any more. Look back at the verse from Isaiah; He is a rock for all ages!

Beautiful story and reminder. I too will think of this when I see a rock. Thank you.
Great devotion, my youngest grandson Landon love to throw rocks in any water. He picks them up then looks at them and throws. Sometimes he shares one with me.. Jesus is my Rock to stand on Forever, Amen.
