The Unspeakable Gift

Luke 2:7; 2 Corinthians 9:15

I can remember growing up and getting that one gift each year that stood out above and beyond all the rest. It was something that I truly wanted and words couldn’t describe the joy and appreciation I had in receiving it. But the one gift that I received that is the most appreciated came when I was an adult. It is the gift that keeps on giving and one that has brought much joy, peace, and contentment. That is the gift of God that I received in the person of Jesus Christ!

“Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.” The gift of his son is one that is so full of love because God is love. He gave us his himself! It is at such a depth of love that no one word or phrase can give it the credit it’s due. Even one of the most emphatic, picturesque languages, the Greek language of which the New Testament was written, couldn’t find a word weighty enough. John, the most thoughtful and spiritual of the Gospel writers, used the immeasurable word “so.” “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.” (John 3:16) So Paul doesn’t even try to describe it other than saying it is unspeakable. Although it can’t be described, it surely can be felt, and certainly can be seen.

How many of us have heard those stories of acts of kindness that touched our hearts and made us feel overwhelmed with awe. I have read the biographies of men and woman who dedicated their lives to serving God and helping others in need. They take the gift of God in salvation and share it with others in ways that can only be seen, because words will not give it justice to describe the love of God they have in their hearts that they want others to have. The gift of salvation many times has not been passed on with words as much as it has with hands.

Jesus came to earth to be that gift. He is the gift and giver. He grew up poor, and once he began his ministry he spent the last years of his life homeless. He was the lowliest of all men, yet what he gave is greater riches than any what any man could ever give. He gives men and woman not only what the want, but what they really need which is

• Forgiveness

• Victory over death

• Faith

• Hope

• Love

• Joy

• Peace

When Mary his mother took Jesus and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, I wonder if she really knew that while she was doing it, that she was wrapping the greatest gift that the world could receive. That’s why the Gospel message is receive the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved. It is the word spoken, that leads to a gift that is so unspeakable and yet it also leads to a new life that speaks volumes.
