The Things That Matter

(With deepest thanks and appreciation to Josiah Queen for sharing his words, talent, and voice in this song)

I heard this song a few weeks ago on the Country Faith channel of Apple Music.  I wrote down what I thought was the title but, then I had a hard time finding the song again. I think it's fairly new. Here is the chorus.

“Help me see the world through Your eyes

Til what breaks Your heart is breaking mine.

Slow me down, this world is moving faster

But I don't want to miss the things that matter.”

Boy did this song and lyrics just hit me between the eyes.  The same way when you read a passage of scripture for the umpteenth time and all of a sudden, it hits home.  God uses so many people in so many ways through so many events to grab our attention. How many times does he have to shake and rattle us to get His point across?  More than he would like but also as many as it takes.  In The Chosen, Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus, gets so frustrated with the disciples when they don’t understand one of his parables.  Yet Jesus continues trying to teach them.

The last 4 years of blah, blah, blah has about driven me mad.  The constant drone of 24/7 regurgitation of news, that in most cases was not news but propaganda to begin with, caused many of us to just tune it out.  But, we tuned out everything, including the important stuff. We have become immune to the distress and heartache of those around us.  Try as I might, even the plight of the homeless has dulled.  The begging, pan-handling, drug addiction, and mental heath diseases have become something that I ignore.  How is that a Christian attitude?  How did I become one of those that misses the things that matter?  People matter!

God doesn’t collect good works. He doesn’t collect acts of kindness.  He doesn’t collect church parking lots filled with cars.  He doesn't collect good intentions either. He collects people.

Yep, that hit me too.  God wants people with him in Heaven.  He uses us!  Do I really want my heart to break?  No, of course not but, that’s what it takes for us to notice the things that matter. I pray today that you notice something that matters and at least lift a prayer. God hears our prayers. Our church family matters. Our children matter. Our teaching and training matter. Our prayers matter. Don'y miss the things that matter.
