The Solid Rock

I love rocks. I don’t know why. I just do. We lived in in our last home for 15 years. It had a concrete sidewalk that ran parallel to the house, from the driveway to the front door. It was only about 3 feet off of the foundation. It was stupid looking. From a distance, the yard looked like it ran right up to the front door. I wanted that sidewalk gone. I wanted a rock walkway with a nice curve in it. Well, I finally got my rock walkway in year 14. It was a labor of love and work of art completed by my hubby, my son, his fiancé, and me. I loved rock so much that I even wanted a sitting rock in the flower bed. The guy at the stone yard gave me a big rock to sit on. My hubby called it my “pet rock”.

I wish I could say that was the end of the story. Shortly after the walkway was done, my hubby lost his job of 25+ years, my youngest son got married in our back yard, I left one of my favorite jobs, and then we sold the house and moved. Needless to say, it was bitter sweet. But the rest of the story brings me to where I am today. I built a new house and yes, it has rock. As a matter of fact, I brought one rock with me from my South Carolina home and it is now a permanent part of the wall on the front of my new house. A better story was in the works. I just didn't know it.

As I was looking through old pictures from that time, the song “Christ the Solid Rock” kept popping into my head. “On Christ the solid rock I stand all other ground is sinking sand. All other ground is sinking sand.”

Matthew 7:25 says, “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on the house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.”

Isaiah 28:16 says, therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: Whoever believes will not be in haste.” In all of the ups and downs, Jesus has been my solid rock. I fail him every day but he never fails me. I pray that Jesus is your solid rock.

I hope you hum this tune the rest of the day. https://www.hymnal.net/en/hymn/h/298

P.S. The flat rock leaning against the "sitting rock" is the one now on the wall of my current home.

Your walkway was beautiful, Sara. I know it was hard to leave it. I like rocks, too, and I collect, tumble, and display them. I even had two necklaces made from rocks I picked up in Israel in 1992 - one from an olive grove just outside of Jerusalem and one from the shore of the Sea of Galilee. There are so many references to rocks and stones in God’s word. I especially think of the time when our Lord Jesus was entering Jerusalem and the multitudes were crying out, “Blessed is the King that cometh in the name of the Lord”. The Pharisees asked Jesus to rebuke His disciples and He answered, “I tell you that, if these s…
