The Potter’s Hand

Updated: Mar 22, 2024

I hope all of you have all played in the mud and made mud pies at some point in your child hood.  We were even known to make a few mudballs for throwing at one another.  There is just something about that squishiness that is fun and brings kids together.

Recently my friend Jan, an artist and art teacher, came to my house and gave a lesson in clay work for my home-schooled grandchildren.  Of course, grandma had to get in on the action too.  Jan taught us how to prep the clay, roll it out evenly, and put designs in it with various tools.  Even though we all had the same set of directions and the same clay, each of our projects were different.  Each used their own style and creativity to complete the project.  A week or so later we all came together again, after the clay had air dried and had been through the first firing, in order to glaze them.  Again, each one was different.

As we worked with the clay I kept thinking about the song, The Potter’s Hands.  Each potter has their own style and technique.  Different types of pottery require different types of clay.  The clays can be all different colors before and after firing: Redish-Orange, red clay, tan or brown, white, and or grey clay and I’m sure there may be many other colors .  Our hands kept molding and shaping the clay till we were pleased with the finished product.  Our hands also became cracked and dried because of the clay. All of us got muddy.

There are many verses in the Bible that speak of the potter and the clay, and as I thought about our day, all I could think about was God making Adam from clay and breathing life into him, then making woman from a rib and clay.  God, the Master Potter is constantly working us and molding us into what he wants us to be. We must be pliable in order to be molded.  We will all go through the fire as well, one day when leave this world, to be tested. Jeremiah 18:1-10 tells a story full of symbolism.  Read these few verses today and enjoy these songs about The Potter and the Clay. Then find you some clay and get muddy! You'll love it.

Dear Lord, mold me and make me into what you need me to be.  Amen

A great example of how different we are as individuals. The master is at work molding us into a use for that he needs. While taking some computer classes at MCC we were in the same building as the evening pottery class. When we had a break we would all go see what they were making. Later we would see the finished piece. Then I truly understood the song of the master potter. Amen
