The Pen and the Sword

2 Peter 1:19-21
“The pen is mightier than the sword!” This was a quote by English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton. The point that he was making is diplomacy is much more effective than violence. For most people this statement is hard to believe. Most, if given the option, when it comes to defending themselves would logically pick the sword. But as I have grown older and wiser and in view of contemporary culture, I would have to agree wholeheartedly with Bulwer-Lytton’s statement.
America, the greatest nation in the history of mankind, is on the verge of collapse. It has survived its world wars, cold war, and it war on terrorism. But the empire that is bringing down our civilization today is not one that has nuclear weapons, assault rifles, or tanks. This empire bares only one weapon…the pen! Americas greatest threat and enemy has been the modern media.
Whether it has been through newspapers, social media, editorials, or music and literature, these outlets have had the greatest influence among the younger generation. Rhetoric has made a return and because of the speed at which things travel on social media, once a statement is made, fact or fiction, it’s out there and is left up to the subjective interpretation of the individual.
But we as Christians have the same form of weapon. In fact what we have is a much greater one than any media platform. We have the best of both worlds. We have the pen and the sword. We have the Bible!
The Bible was written by 40 different men from various backgrounds. But it’s inspiration came from the Holy Spirit. It contains the Gospel by which Paul said would be proclaimed by the foolishness of preaching. The written word being proclaimed throughout the ages has brought down the mightiest of kingdoms and the toughest of men whose hearts were made like water as they heard the Gospel. The writer of Hebrews says that the Word of God is “alive and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword.” (Hebrews 4:12) It was the weapon that Jesus used to triumph over the lies of satan in the wilderness and it is the same weapon that has caused the Church to endure throughout its history.
Andrei Sakharov designed the Soviet Unions RDS-37 nuclear bomb. He understood the power that this weapon contained to cause death and destruction. But after seeing the effects of it and the manipulation of world governments, he said:
“I've always thought that the most powerful weapon in the world was the bomb and that's why I gave it to my people, but I've come to the conclusion that the most powerful weapon in the world is not the bomb but it's the truth.”
Jesus said that “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”(Matthew 24:35) What makes the Bible the most powerful weapon is that it is the truth. Modern news outlets and personalities may use their temporary power to promote lies and sway elections, but they will one day stand before a Holy God and will have to give an account for the deception they spread through their liberal propaganda. And by the way, the book that will be open on that day by which God will judge all the human race will be the Bible! “Forever, oh Lord, thy word is settled in heaven!“ (Psalm 119:89)
The Bible is the written word of God that cuts to the heart and brings men and woman to the knowledge of the truth, found only in the person of Jesus Christ. Now that’s good news!

That is good news!
