Matthew 6:5-15
The Lord’s Prayer is more than just a daily prayer. It is meant to be reflected upon as a daily reminder of how much we need God every moment of every day in our lives.
Take a moment to pray the Lord prayer before continuing.
Our Father who art in heaven…
God is our Father! He is our father in creation, and he is our father in salvation. Just as a father provides and protects his children, God the Father does the same for us his children. Paul said when we receive Christ, we become the sons of God! We have been adopted into God’s family and we are eligible to receive all that is contained within the inheritance that we share with Christ.
The Lords Prayer teaches us that we are daily dependent on God our Father just as children in the natural depend on their father. What we need everyday to sustain us in the present and preserve us in the future is grace. And only God is the fiber of grace! Our earthly fathers do four things for us daily to make sure we are cared for and our Heavenly Father does the same. Those four things are:
· Provide
· Protect
· Watch
· Watch over
From a provision standpoint we realize with James that “Every good and perfect gift come down from the father of lights.” Peter said that God has given unto us “All things that pertain to life and godliness. We need to remember that we can’t perform one task without God’s strength of mind and body or grow one crop without the rain from heaven. We cannot purchase one grocery item with God our Father providing the farmer, truck driver, and one store owner. All of these are vocations that God has given in our commerce system. These are just a few of the things provided in life. Concerning godliness, where would we be without Jesus and the cross, the Holy Spirit, the Bible, and the church? How would we stand without mercy and grace? How lonely and lost would we be without prayer and fellowship with Jesus in our life? What hope would we have in the last few moments of our life facing the great enemy of mankind, death, without the assurance of the resurrection?
God our Father most assuredly “Gives us this day our daily bread” and “Forgives us of our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us.” Indeed “All things that pertain to life and godliness” he has provided for us in and through Jesus Christ, his only begotten son, who brings us into this sonship.
