The Gift of Life

Friday, June 24, 2022, a significant date for us as Bible believing Christians! The nearly fifty year ruling of Roe vs. Wade was overturned by the United States Supreme Court by a count of 6-3! Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113, was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States generally protects a pregnant woman's liberty to choose to have an abortion. As a Christian I am pro-life and do not understand how anyone can say an unborn baby is not a person. Even my great niece recognizes that there are conflicting laws and rules involved. In a conversation with her recently, she made a profound statement (profound for a thirteen year old) in that she called attention to the fact that as a nation it has been okay to kill the unborn but if a murder of a pregnant woman results in the death of her unborn child then that carries two counts of murder, not just one.

The very familiar scripture from Psalm 139:13-16 says, “You are the one who created my innermost parts; you knit me together while I was still in my mother’s womb.” I give thanks to you that I was marvelously set apart. Your works are wonderful –I know that very well. My bones weren’t hidden from you when I was being put together in a secret place, when I was being woven together in the deep parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my embryo, and on your scroll every day was written that was being formed for me, before any one of them had yet happened.” I am sure some of you have had the blessing of seeing your child or grandchild by way of a high-tech ultrasound so you know the feeling of seeing, long before you hear it, their tiny precious heart beating at just a few weeks into the pregnancy. Further along, you hear that steady thump - thump of the heart and brain activity is detected. Tiny fingers and toes are present and I could go on and on. The point here is that from day one this is a living soul to be treasured and protected. In the case of my grandson, his parents saw him as a five day old embryo! Our God’s creation of human life is … well the only word I can use to express what I am trying to convey is AWESOME and even this word doesn’t do justice to His power and creation process.

God, right off the bat lets us know that it was He who created mankind. Genesis 1:27, “God created humanity in God’s own image, in the divine image God created them, male and female God created them.” Job, in the midst of all his trials recognized this truth. He says in Job 31:15, “Didn’t the one who made me in the belly make them; didn’t the same one fashion us in the womb?”

Praise the Lord that this ruling has finally been overturned. May God forgive us for the years that the voices of His people were silent on this matter. I pray and thank Him today for those justices who did not back down in their convictions and ask that He protects them from the malice and violence that is so prevalent in today’s world.
