The Dark Well

There is an old, abandoned well out in the field on our property. My husband pointed it out to me one afternoon while we were out on our golf cart. Actually, he did more than point it out; he stopped the golf cart and went over to investigate. I was more than a little skeptical about peering down into the deep blackness of that hole. It is covered in an attempt to keep anyone from falling in, but just the thought of that possibility gave me goosebumps. What an awful place to find yourself, if you survived the fall. In that deep, dark and damp hole, out of sight of anyone and probably out of calling distance as well. Would we not think all was lost? There would be no rescuer coming to our aid which would mean that there in that hole, far from any hope of rescue we would perish.

How often have we found ourselves in that hole emotionally, financially or even spiritually? That intangible hole can be just as dark and deep as the actual well in the field. There is a difference in that while no one may be able to reach into the real hole and pull us out, God can reach into the hole in our life and pull us up! There is no place we can find ourselves that God cannot hear our call and reach in to lift us up. This promise is in Isaiah 59:1, “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither is his ear heavy, that it cannot hear.”

There is no place too dark as we find in John 1:5, “And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” When you are in a room that is blanketed in total darkness and a candle is lit, the darkness will not overtake the light but rather the light dispels the darkness. If there are dark places in your life today turn to the light of the world, Jesus. As He begins His work in your life the light of Christ will become bigger and bigger and the darkness will recede.

Once we are redeemed and become the children of the King, we are to walk in the light of God’s word so that we, ourselves may be that light to someone else. Take a look at Ephesians 5:8, “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.”

Remember, there is no place God cannot reach or hear you. If you find yourself in a deep, damp well of darkness you need only to cry out for Him.
