The Blood of the Lamb

“Instead, you were liberated by the precious blood of Christ, like that of a flawless, spotless lamb.”  1 Peter 1:19 (CEB)

A few days ago, my friend Annette Stewart posted something on Facebook I had never read.  It speaks volumes about the blood of the Lamb.  I loved the story, whether or not it is a true story I do not know…I don’t think it matters; the lesson it teaches is true.

I have decided there is very little I can add to this by way of my own words.  This speaks so loudly on its own.

A rattlesnake bit one of my sheep in the face about a week ago. Deadliest snake that lives around here. The sheep’s face swelled up and hurt her terribly.

But the old rattlesnake didn't know the kind of blood that flows through the sheep. Anti-venom is most often made from sheep's blood. The sheep swelled for about 2 days but the blood of the lamb destroyed the venom of the serpent.

I was worried but the sheep didn't care. She kept on eating, kept on drinking and kept on climbing because she knew she was alright.

Often the serpents of this life will reach out and bite us. They inject their poison into us but they cannot overcome the Blood of the Lamb of God that washes away the sin of the world and the sting of death. Don't worry about the serpent or his bite; just make sure that the Lamb's Blood is flowing through your veins.”

Right? Right!  A sermon on its own!  Annette, thank you for posting and my prayer is that many read it on Facebook who may not have known about the “blood and the Lamb of the world”.

May I just add this note?  What happens when a rattlesnake bites a sheep? Sheep have very strong immune systems and a natural tolerance to snake venom. Therefore, the lamb takes the snake venom into itself. At that point the lamb's blood releases powerful antibodies that overcome the venom.  (www.reptileknowledge.com )

The shed blood of Christ is our lamb’s blood, and it releases us from the venom of Satan.  Hallelujah!  With His blood flowing through ours, as the author says, we have no worry about the serpent or his bite.

This little chorus from There is Power in the Blood, is a great way to close today’s devotion.

There is pow'r, pow'r, wonder-working pow'r In the blood of the Lamb; There is pow'r, pow'r, wonder-working pow'rIn the precious blood of the Lamb.  Lewis E. Jones
