Taste and See

This morning my grandson and I took a little walk before the day grew too hot. We wandered by the tractor shed and up past the grapevine to a place where I had spotted a bit of honeysuckle a few days earlier. Nothing says summer to me like the scent of honeysuckle! Then there is that little dollop of sweetness just waiting inside the bloom! I pulled a few blooms from the stem and let Bryson get a taste of that goodness; he was a little unsure until that first drop hit his tongue and then he wanted more and more. In a matter of a minute or so we had “eaten” six or eight of them and still he asked for more. That is how life lived walking with Jesus should be – we should want more day by day.
“Taste and see how good the Lord is! The one who takes refuge in him is truly happy!” (CEB) This comes from Psalm 34:8. A good explanation of the verse is found on gotquestions.org and is: To taste involves testing or sampling; to see involves understanding or perceiving. The phrase taste and see, then, means “try and experience.” David urges God’s people to discover the goodness of the Lord by personal trial and experience it for themselves. He doesn’t want readers to merely take his word for it that the Lord is good; he wants them to actively experience and know for themselves the fact that God is good.
Further into this same passage we see that those who trust and take refuge in Him have every need met (vs.9-10), in verses 11-15 we find that He provides a long and good life and delivers us from troubles and enemies in the final verses (17-22). What has He not covered? If we place our trust and hope in the Lord, then he will supply ALL of our needs. Philippians 4:19 verifies this truth; “My God will meet your every need out of his riches in the glory that is found in Christ Jesus.” (CEB)
Hebrews 6:4-5 attests to the “wanting more” after that first taste. “Because it’s impossible to restore people to changed hearts and lives who turn away once they have seen the light, tasted the heavenly gift, become partners with the Holy Spirit, and tasted God’s good word (and the powers of the coming age). (CEB)
Yes, the honeysuckle is sweet but nothing can compare to the sweetness of having Jesus as your Saviour! Taste and test, see and understand and experience God’s goodness for yourself!
Taste and see...
And but believe that
He holds riches in glory for you and me.
Taste and see….
He will meet every need
For those who will plead
To step into the Light
Out of darkness and restored of sight.
Taste and see…
How good is He
Who is our refuge and our might!

Very good devotion, so many will not take the challenge to try and miss the opportunity to view life with the Lord. Guide each of us to someone that needs you, Jesus today, put words in our mouths on what to say, Amen to his sweetness.
