Stay Awake

Mark 13:31-37

Our Lord tells us in the parable that we are to watch! The reason why this applies to us is that he said “What I say unto you (his disciples) I say unto all (all believers) watch.” To stay alert after waiting so long is one of the biggest challenges to us a Christians.

We all have heard the story of The Boy Who Cried Wolf. It’s about a young shepherd boy who kept crying out that the dreaded wolf had come to get the sheep. When he cried the people came to the rescue only to find out it was a joke. Several times he made this false claim. Finally he cried out one more time and the wolf had really come. The people didn’t respond and the sheep were slain and eaten. The message had lost its seriousness and weight because of the joking young boy.

The second coming is no joke! There have been many preachers who have preached many sermons over the last two thousand years on the imminent return of Jesus Christ. He hasn’t come as yet. But, nevertheless, it should not take away the seriousness of this event because as the writer of Hebrews said “For yet a little while, And he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.”( Hebrews 10:37) We have to shake off that drowsy spirit of the age which tempts us in to thinking that we have a longer time than we think. Jesus said he would come as a thief. A thief doesn’t give any warning before he breaks into the house.

Jesus tells them about the doorkeeper who was to guard the door or keep watch. We are those doorkeepers. We have to set a watch upon our eyes and ears which are the doorways to the soul. What we see or hear affects our thinking. If we are allowing the spirit of the age and the things of this world to take the edge off of our readiness, then we will be caught unaware and find ourselves like those foolish virgins or wicked servants missing the wedding banquet and forever shut out of the presence of God.

So let us guard our hearts and minds today by reading and meditating on the word of God. Let us stay alert by praying “Thy kingdom come” or “Even so come, Lord Jesus.” Let us not grow weary in well doing “For the Son of man will come in a hour you think not!” (Matthew 24:44)
