Sin Lies At Your Door

Genesis 4:7; Galatians 1:3,4
I hear some people say sometimes that they can’t wait until the Lord comes again or their appointed time to die comes so they can escape the evil of this world. I get it, I find myself longing more and more for the new heavens and the new earth and the devil being cast away into hell for eternity. But here in our text Paul tells us that we don’t have to wait for those two events to be delivered from evil. He tells us that “Christ gave himself for our sins to deliver us from this present evil age according to the will of our God and Father.” We don’t have to wait until our death to be delivered from the power of sin and evil, he conquered them through his death!
Before Cain killed Abel, God came to him and ask him a question. He said “Sin lies at the door and its desire is to rule you, but will you rule over it.” (Genesis 4:7) No one can deny the power of sin and evil in this world, but we as Christians should not deny the power of Christ and the righteousness we received from him due to his death and resurrection. One reason why so many Christians fall under sin’s dominion is that they do not submit themselves to the power of the Holy Spirit and his work of grace to strengthen us in our moments of weakness. Another reason why Christians fail is that they don’t pray one of the most simplest, but yet most powerful of all prayers, which is the Lord’s Prayer. In it there is the petition of “Lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil.” This is what our Lord taught us to pray daily as a reminder that it is not his will for us to be ruled by sin and Satan and by our dependence on him to help us not just conquer, but be “More than conquerors.” (Romans 8:37)
So, is sin lying at your door today? That word lying could also be translated as crouching. Is the devil, who is like a roaring lion, lurking about, and seeking in whom he may devour, crouching around the next corner to overtake you. If you are human and are a Christian, then I can guarantee that both are waiting on you and I. But also too Christ is waiting! He is waiting for us to surrender our will, our strength, and also our confidence towards him in prayer. Deliver us from evil! According to Paul, he already has!
