“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders;
Opportunity Came a Knocking
Opportunity came a knocking on my door the other day,
I hurried right on past him and I said, “I cannot stay.”
I have so many things to do for me, myself, and I,
I bid, “Come back another day,” and then I waved good-bye.
Opportunity came a knocking on my door the following day,
Again, I hurried past him yes, I hurried on my way.
My list had grown much longer, I had many things to do,
I said, “Come back another day, so I can talk with you.”
As I was leaving home today, opportunity was not there,
But as I traveled down the road, I saw him everywhere.
I saw him leave the schoolhouse as a child was going in,
A hiring sign was on the door, that’s where he must have been.
I saw him at the grocery store just standing at the door,
A lady in a wheel chair is who he waited for.
I saw him up upon the steps of the church just down the street,
A mother and her little girl were sitting at his feet.
A still, small voice now spoke to me and I became concerned,
When opportunity comes a knocking, this is what I learned.
Do not rush right past him, take time to hear his voice,
It’s up to us to listen, for he gives us all a choice.
When opportunity comes a knocking there’s a reason why he’s there,
God has sent him to our door with burdens we’re to bear.
Be his hands and be his feet, he may never come again,
So, when opportunity comes a knocking, be sure to let him in!
