Now that our grandchildren are several months into their second year, their desire for a bit of independence has become apparent. Both Amelia and Bryson are quick to say, “Mia do it” or “Bryson do it” when we or their parents attempt to do something for them. No matter the task, or the fact they just can’t tackle it yet, hasn’t occurred to them. Sometimes it is extremely funny, other times, we want to do it for them and move on to the next activity. In thinking about how to apply this idea to a devotion, God nudged me with this sobering thought….how many times do I do the same thing instead of allowing the Lord to help me?
How many times have I tried to fix a situation myself? How often have I worked so hard to fit a square peg into a round hole to no avail? How many times have I attempted to make certain arrangements, heal a hurt or make an important decision with the thought, “Lucy do it”? Our final solution, the last place we look to for help should not be Jesus – He should be the starting point!
The Bible tells us that we need only to ask for help. We see in 1 Peter 5:7 these words, “Throw all your anxiety onto him because He cares about you.” (CEB) Our first step however is verbalizing our need of Him. Look at the words of David in Psalm 86:1,3, “Lord, listen closely to me and answer me, because I am poor and in need. Have mercy on me, Lord, because I cry out to you all day long.” (CEB) Psalm 119:133 leads us to ask for direction and the ability to stand firm in the Word: “Keep my steps steady by your word; don’t let any sin rule me.” (CEB)
There are times we need help to overcome past choices, to be lifted from despair and heart ache. Psalm 79:8 is a good verse to pray in such times. “Don’t remember the iniquities of past generations; let your compassion hurry to meet us because we’ve been brought so low.” (CEB) When searching for a refuge and protection, read Psalm 16:1, “Protect me God, because I take refuge in you.” (CEB)
Finally, we can tie all of this together with another verse from the Psalms. Psalm 121:1-2, “I raise my eyes toward the mountains. Where will my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.” (CEB)
In closing, would you pray this short prayer with me today?
O Lord, my God you are my refuge and my strength. You are my ever-present help in times of trouble. When it seems like my world is crumbling around me and I am thrown around by the storms of my life, take away my fear. When I am weak, you are my strength. When I am vulnerable, you are my refuge. Remind me Lord, when I cry for help, you will answer. Help me to look to You first for you have told us to cast all our burdens on You because You care for us.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Thank you for this message, Lucy, and for the great collection of supporting scripture. I’ll keep this one for future and frequent use.
Very good Lucy!
I have thought of this same topic so often and ask the question, “why is it so hard for a Christian to ask for help Or even prayer?
