Look to the LIGHT

No sooner than I’d said that we hadn’t seen any snakes this summer one slithered out of the wood line as my daughter, grandson and I rode by in the golf cart! We were unprepared to take on a snake so as most women would, we began yelling for my husband as I turned the cart around and headed for the house! He was also unprepared; barefoot and no weapon with which to take on this creepy crawler. I guess the lights from the golf cart hypnotized the snake, for he hardly moved once I got him in my lights. My husband found a large stick and was then able to kill the snake. It was a copperhead about 12 inches in length.

I knew right away there would be a lesson from this encounter and in fact, I believe this story offers two spiritual lessons. The first is how easily and quickly sin can slip in, just like this snake. Quietly and stealthily he slid out of the cover of the woods right into our lives! Real and threatening, as Brooks approached him, he took on striking posture. So like Satan! We go on living life and all of a sudden that great deceiver, liar and destroyer shows up. Here we look to 1 Peter 5:8 for how to be prepared, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”

Secondly, what brought that serpent under compliance but light….yes, LIGHT! Christ, the Light of the world brings Satan under subjection. This truth is found in Matthew 28:18 where Jesus tells us, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” Jesus’ authority overrules Satan’s authority and he can have no hold on us who are believers and followers of Christ.

We Christians must read our Bibles and spend time in prayer to remain sober and vigilant and trust that Jesus has all power and authority in heaven and earth.

Be aware and watchful day to day and be sure your LIGHT is on and bright!
