Life is a Journey

For some reason, my family has always been the family that’s from somewhere else. I was born in the foothills of the North Carolina Mountains surrounded by a multitude of family. Within four years, daddy moved us to Marion County, South Carolina, to take up farming in the “flat lands”. I went through all of my school years in South Carolina. But for some unknown reason, I always referred to “the mountains” as home. We always went home for Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. That was where all of our family lived. It was a journey. 5 kids sometimes extras for good measure, and 1 or 2 adults, all loaded up in a paneled station wagon with the fold up buddy seats in the rear and traveled for 4-5 hours with no stopping if daddy was driving. Like I said, a journey, a long, long, journey. No pitstops, minimal snacks, and Dramamine for car sickness. Oh yeah, did I forget to say carsick? Ugh!!!

College, marriage, 2 kids and I still did what my mom did. Load the car, kids, and kitchen sink, to make the journeys. Some were adventurous and some were “just let me get there in one piece” trips. To this day I hate being in the back seat because I just hate being nauseated. But I wouldn’t trade a single trip for anything.

Thinking back on this I realized that Jesus and the disciples were always on a journey and their whole purpose was to build a family. They became family to one another and were constantly seeking to grow the family of God. They wanted brothers and sisters in Christ, that would help continue what they started when they had to move on to the next town. We as Christians are to be on a journey. Taking the message of Christ where ever we journey; carrying the Good News.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your path.

Judges 18:6 And the priest said to them, “Go in peace. The journey on which you go is under the eye of the Lord.”

Matthew 22:37, 39 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind… And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
