Let it Go

Recently I had a long overdue visit with a friend from my old days at the Savings & Loan. We had lunch and just a great time of fellowship and catching up. One thing we talked about was our shared inability to let things go. Particularly those things that we both have that belonged to our parents, things that are truly just taking up space in closets, cabinets or attics. She told me of her attempts to clear out a closet that holds a number of her treasures and at the end of the day she had removed nothing! We both know it is the memory that we keep not necessarily the item that we continue to hold onto that captures our heart. Both she and I know we need to let go!

While I was reflecting back on our conversation the Lord punched me with the idea of all the things that He wants me to let go of that I am still holding on to. In Ecclesiastes 3:6 we read there is a time for keeping and a time for throwing away. Sometimes the enemy deceives us and hinders the work of God by keeping what’s meant to go. What are some of the things we could let go of?

I bet we all have people in our lives we need to let go. Most of the time there is growth, realizations and breakthrough in every area of life when God asks you to let someone go. What about material possessions or money? Others can be blessed by us letting go of some unused item, perhaps a piece of furniture or an appliance. There are times when God calls on us to let go of some of the cash in our wallets.

Our time, mindset and our control of ourselves are also things we need to learn to let go. People want to make sure that everything goes according to their plan. But to let go especially when things get messy and aren't going right is to finally let God take over and be the Driver. Letting go is a beautiful surrender before the LORD that sets us free from what is pulling us back and keeping us locked up.

As we consider things to give up remember this verse from Psalm 118:8, “It’s far better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust any human.” (CEB)

Letting go and, instead, letting God be the center of our lives helps us eradicate the notion that we handle our life.

Perhaps this prayer will be helpful if you, like me, have trouble letting go.

I thank You Father that You are now in charge of the things we surrender and let go in our lives. We are in good hands. Thank You for the breakthrough, security and freedom in Jesus’ name.
