Exodus 20:21
John said of God, “In Him is light, and there is no darkness in Him at all.” (1John 1:5) God is light and His light is so majestic that to look upon Him in His true essence would bring death. Even though there isn’t any darkness in God, that doesn’t mean He doesn’t dwell in darkness. Our text tells us that “Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.”
I share this account with us because many are saying that we may be entering into one of the darkest periods of our nation’s history. When we survey the list of things that is happening in our country, it does appear that there is an uncertainty about the future of this nation. Never has light and darkness been so laid out before us and contrasted the way it had been presented in the past election year. The Pandemic, protest, riots, looting, and the appointment of a Supreme Court Judge of 2020 were just a few of many things that has caused division and unrest.
For many Christians, we stand afar off and look to our leadership for answers, comfort, confidence, and hope. Just like the children of Israel, who were afraid after the divine revelation of the law accompanied with lightening, thunder, fire, smoke, and an earthquake, we are looking for stability in a time of shaking and sifting. What did they see? They saw Moses entering in to that darkness unafraid and with confidence.
Why? Because he new that God was there! Yes, there is no darkness in God, but we can find God in dark times and dark places. Just look at the dark periods of church history and you will see that God was working behind the scenes. Also just look at the darkest moments of your life and see how God was there. Looking back on those times, maybe in those moments you couldn’t see Him, but you knew He was present with you.
Two Examples:
First, David said in Psalms 23:4 “Yea, though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death thou art with me.” How did David know that God was with him? Could he see Him. Maybe or maybe not. But he did hear the Shepehard’s voice.
Second, when Elijah was in the cave, a dark place in the darkest moment of his life, He didn’t find God in the earthquake, wind, or fire. But he knew God was there. How? He heard God’s still small voice.
What confidence we have in knowing that whatever lies ahead of us, the fact is that our good Shepehard goes before us and if we listen to His voice, he will guide us through it!
