Mark 6:35-52
The New American Standard Bible says in verse 52 “For they had not gained any insight from the miracle of the loves, but their heart was hardened.” I thought about this word insight. Webster defines Insight as “The power or act of seeing into a situation; the act or result of apprehending the inner nature of things or of seeing intuitively.” In others words it means to be able to comprehend the inner nature of a person or thing. Having this situation laid out for us it begs the question of how could the disciples have so much unbelief after having seen so many miracles? The answer is they did not understand the person of Jesus and the nature of his work.
Jesus performed miracles around the disciples everyday. In our text he had just done two that was on the level of beyond extraordinary: the feeding of the five thousand and calming the storm. And yet they still wondered and marveled that he possess such power. I guess these things had become so common place in their daily routines that they over looked the meaning and purpose of Jesus’ ministry. I do believe that we should be astonished by what Christ does for his church on the level of the miraculous, not out of unbelief, but of thanksgiving.
He does so many things for us everyday in our life and we miss many of them due to our lack of acknowledging him. Many things we take for granted that he provides and when he does something on a greater level then we respond like the disciples in wondering how does he do this? What we need is insight in order to be able to apprehend his purpose in doing these things in our everyday lives.
God does not do these things for us just to show off. He does them for his glory and our benefit because he loves us and has taken on the responsibility of being our caretaker. He provides bread, clothing, finances, healing, and above all, grace, mercy, forgiveness and hope everyday of our lives. We should never take credit for these things, nor take them for granted, but glorify God in that he has “Given unto us all things that pertain to life and godliness.” (2 Peter 1:3)
You should take the time at the end of the day to meditate on the little miracles that God has done for you and in you that day. Pray that God will give you insight into what he is doing in your life. Do not miss out on the small things, so when he does the big things, your heart won’t be without understanding and hard like the disciples, but thankful!
