Heavenly Treasures

After quite a few days of rain and gloomy weather, I was thrilled to wake to the glorious sunshine over the pond this morning. The woodland creatures are thrilled as well if the actions of the squirrels are any indication! As I sit having my morning coffee, these comedic critters are seemingly having the time of their lives! They are chasing each other around the base of a large pine tree across the pond, and although I’m inside I can almost hear the bark on the tree being crunched as their claws bite into it. From the tree they race off toward the corn pile my husband has there for the deer to feed on. It appears the deer have been forced to share with the squirrels. The morning has dawned much chillier than the last few weeks, so I think these little creatures with the plume like tails have been sent into panic mode. Suddenly, it’s become winter and they haven’t stored their treasure of nuts, and maybe corn, for the coming months.
We are to store up treasure too, not for things on earth but heavenly treasures. Matthew 6:19-21 tells us, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Does this mean do not prepare for the future on planet earth? No, I think we are to make sound financial plans being good stewards of what God has given each of us. But we are not to put all our trust in the things that will rust and rot, but in Jesus Christ our Saviour. If our money, cars, boats, and other things are our treasures, then they will be the focus of our heart. If you are storing up heavenly treasures, then that is where your heart’s focus will be. We’ve all heard the saying, “You can’t take it with you” and that is true, the only thing that leaves this earth when we do is our soul.
God will supply all your needs from His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. This truth is from Philippians 4:19. Too often, we expect all of our wants to be supplied as well. Storing up riches in heaven is simply living your life for Christ by following His teachings, having pure motives and a desire for God’s interests.
How full is your heavenly treasure chest today?

Thank you all! ❤️
Whenever I read these verses from Matthew my mind goes back to my 5th grade Sunday School class where my father was the teacher and I first heard these words of our Lord. My dad was a “chart” teacher so he first had us suggest some of the things that were “treasures on earth”. But the part of the lesson that impressed me most was when the class brainstormed to create a list of things that could be considered “laying up treasures in heaven”. I’ve carried that Sunday School lesson and the command of that scripture with me ever since. I appreciate your lesson as well, Lucy, and I like your comprehensive definition of storing up riches in heaven. Thanks.
How perfect. You and Kathy make a great team and compliment each other well.
Your blessings on me are sufficient to me. I have nothing better!
Stay busy with our Lord’s work and helping those around us with their needs, then you will treasures later on. Follow the book of James to get my meaning, Amen.
