Grip Before You Slip

You’ve stepped onto the bank of a pond or lake and before you know it your foot has slipped and you’ve ended up a little bit wet or muddy. I’m sure this has happened to most of us, if not by the water then perhaps on a hike in the mountains, your heart skips a beat as you’re surely going to roll down the mountain, right? Here at the pond it’s happened to me on several occasions! Brooks has been known to not just have his foot slip but also the mower! What a helpless feeling when your foot slips out from under you no matter where you are.

We simply recover and regain control and proceed on, but what about when that slip is a spiritual one? How is control recovered? Psalm 94:18-19 tells us, “Whenever I feel my foot slipping, your faithful love steadies me, LORD. When my anxieties multiply, your comforting calms me down.” (CEB) I love the way the King James reads but for this devotion I feel the Common English version makes the message so clear. Before we’re aware of the slip, God has already reached out his right hand to steady us; He calms us in our anxiety. What a comforting thought, what a promise for us as we live each and every day for Him.

Walking with Christ makes us surefooted, but when the occasional slip happens reach out for God’s hand for it is there waiting for you to grab hold. Another verse to remember is Psalm 63:8, “My whole being clings to you; your strong hand upholds me.”

Grasp and cling to His hand and remember that He is the one who strengthens, loves and carries us. Because He is a faithful God we can always count on the power of His Hand.

This made me thing of a song. The Ball Brothers sing a song that has the line, “Sometimes he calms the storm and other times he’s calms the child”.
