Psalms 73:24
As I sit here writing this devotion I am sitting with my dad as he recovers from a heart attack. Thank God that it wasn’t a massive heart attack, but nevertheless, it caused us a brief scare and a little uncertainty moving forward as they assess the damage.
I believe God was preparing me for this episode with dad because all week this scripture has been on my heart and the main part of my study. In fact I thought it was going to be the foundational text for my sermon on Sunday, but come to find out it has been the foundation of my experience this week for I have found that as dad’s heart was failing, “God has been the strength of my heart and my portion.”
Daddy has had a weak heart for a good many years, but yet he has still kept going. I am amazed at his determination not to let his heart condition deter him from still living his life. It has not been the life he wants, but yet it has been the life he has lived. In reflecting upon all of this the last few days I have come to learn a great spiritual lesson.
We all experienced heart failure from time to time. There are times and situations in life that just takes the breath out of us. We feel weak and overwhelmed by circumstances that are greater and stronger than we are and we can become anxious, fearful, and disoriented. It’s not the life we chose, but yet it is and must be the life we live, and what gives us the strength to carry through is God and his power that comes from a “Grace that is sufficient…a strength made perfect in weakness.” 2nd Corinthians 12:9
Daddy has and is receiving the best care possible. I have been greatly impressed with each physician, nurse, and staff. If each of these being human can provide such care and strength in daddy’s weakness, how much more can the great physician provide strength for us when our heart fails us?
Thank you God for been the source of strength for me, my family, and most of all my dad during this time of weakness! Amen!
