Filled And Led By The Spirit

Matthew 4:1

“And Jesus was lead up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.”

Imagine the Son of God being led by the Spirit of God! It just goes to show us the perfect unity and harmony of the Trinity.

Jesus not only submitted himself as God in the flesh to the Holy Spirit, but also depended upon the Holy Spirit throughout his ministry. Submission and Dependance are two unique qualities to the follower of Christ.

If Christ needed the fullness of the Holy Spirit, how much more do we? I think that we are a little reluctant to pray and seek for the fullness of the Spirit in our lives because it will bring us into an accountability. Jesus, right before he ascended, told the disciples to go into all the world and preach the Gospel, but before they do to wait on the promise of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1:4-8) God does not give us the fullness of the Spirit to do nothing, but to be witnesses of him and for him and bare spiritual fruit in this fallen world.

Another reason we may be reluctant is that the Spirit may lead us into places that test us and make us feel uncomfortable. When we are Spirit filled we shouldn’t feel uncomfortable in this world. There should be many things that tempt us, grieve us, and seek to hinder us because that is the nature of the world. (1 John 2:15) But by overcoming these things as Christ did, we glorify God and prove to the world that Good, Acceptable, and Perfect will of God.”(Romans 12:2)

Finally we must remember that if the Spirit leads us in, He will lead us out! Jesus came out of the wilderness triumphant, not weak, but as as Luke records,He returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit.” (Luke 4:14) The Spirit led him in and led him out and he came out as triumphant as he went in without sin, failure, and accomplishing the task at hand.

Paul said “For as many as are led by the Spirit, they are the sons of God.” (Romans 8:14) I want to encourage you during this Lent season to pray and be filled with the Spirit of God and to “Grieve not the Holy Spirit, wherewith you are sealed til the day of redemption.” (Ephesians 4:30)
