Eternal Security

Romans 8:1-4; 31-39

Living in times like these we so often feel insecure about our futures. Ungodliness and lawlessness have created a certain degree of fear for many as we feel that everything that is precious to us must be guarded. We have things like

Home security

Financial security

Social security

Job security

National security

Homeland security

And all other types of security that make us feel safe or protected.

But one thing that many Christians worry about is their eternal security. They ask questions like

CanI really endure unto the end?

Can I live the Christian life every day?

Is there hope for me after committing or falling into a certain sin?

These questions are real, and they are deep and must be answered for the believer to have any type of rest and hope in Jesus Christ. My biggest fear early on in my walk with the Lord was when I would get up every morning I would think “I hope I can stay saved today!” That was not a good way for me as Christian to live. It brought frustration because it promoted bondage and not the freedom that Jesus spoke of in the gospels. Finally, one day I came to the knowledge of the truth and was set free from the chains that bound me.

John 3:16 says that “Whosever believes upon Him shall have everlasting life.” The salvation that God offers us is based on the merit of Jesus Christ’s atoning work on the cross and His resurrection from the dead. It is by His obedience that we are saved. It is through His death that we have life. It is by His becoming sin that we become the righteousness of God through Him. It is because He lives that we will live also.

Our scripture tells us that “Who can bring a charge to God’s elect? Who can condemn, it is God who justifies.” Not even satan has the power to condemn much less anybody else because “there is therefore now no condemnation to them who are in Christ.” Does this mean that we can continue on in sin and live our life as we want to? God forbid as Paul would say! (Romans 6:2) The fact is that now that we have the life of Christ within us (Galatians 2:20) we don’t want to live that old life anymore. We are new creatures with new hearts, new minds, and new attitudes. We don’t enjoy sin anymore like we used to and because of that it loses its power over us.

The Christian life is not one of perfection, but it does create in us a perfect heart. A heart that wants to please God. When we don’t, Christ atoning work and God's grace is sufficient for us. Through faith we can live a life every day that is faithful and fruitful and will have the grace that will enable us to endure unto the end. There are a lot of things I am not certain about moving forward into the future but this I know for sure that “Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus!”

Read and meditate for on 1 John 5:13
