Do You Know What Love Is?

1Corinthians 13:4-8a

(ESV) Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends…

I know when you read the title, the song by Foreigner, “I Want to Know What Love Is” may have popped into your head. Even the lyrics kind of go with the theme. Yes, it’s that time of year when love is in the air. Lucy opened the door with her devotions last week. However, if you are a Christian, then LOVE is in the air ALL the time. We don’t always feel it. We don’t always show it but it’s still there. Love may be the most important word of all time. How do I know? Read the last three words in the verse. LOVE NEVER ENDS!

Now if I had to define love, I would simply say it’s a feeling and you know it when you see it. But the verse from Corinthians goes much much deeper. Just reread the verse and meditate on it.

Volumes have been written, poems have been penned, lyrics have been sung, all about love. There are different kinds of love and we know it when we see it. We know it when we feel it. But, is it a love that never ends? There is the love of a husband for his wife and vice versa, the love of a parent for a child, the love of grandchild for a grandparent, the love of a child for a pet or a favorite toy, the desire to hang onto something or someone.

Pages and pages could be consumed trying to describe love but thankfully 1Corinthians 13, often referred to as the Love Chapter, guides us in defining true love for mankind, love for our neighbor and love for one another in the body of Christ. Spend time this week examining the love that surrounds you. Even when you feel unloved, the love of Christ is always there and always ready for you.
