Daily Postures

Psalms 145:1,2

David says in this Psalm ““I will extol thee, my God, O King; And I will bless thy name for ever and ever. Every day will I bless thee; And I will praise thy name for ever and ever.”  This is good advise from a man after God’s on heart who is instructing us on the best way to begin the day.

This Psalm is known as an Acrostic Psalm. It contain 22 verses which aligns with the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Many Psalms and other passages in the Old Testament where written in this style for the purpose of memorization. They would learn this by heart and by learning them by heart it’s truths would take hold of the heart and would be a “Lamp unto their feet and a light unto their path.” Psalms 119:105.

These first two verses are our focus in this devotion and what we learn from them is that there is a certain posture that God should have and that we should have in our daily worship of him. To extol means to be uplifted of to lift up. In other words God must be head and shoulders above any and all things in our life. When the Levites carried the Ark of the Covenant through the wilderness they were to slide two poles through its rings and carry it on their shoulders. That way when the enemy saw Israel coming they would see the Ark first, the representation of God, head and shoulders above all and that Israel’s God was among them. The Ark was also a type of Christ in the Old Testament and it’s being lifted up would point to Christ death on the cross in which He would “Draw all men unto Himself.” John 12:32 So to extol means to lift up. Being lifted up is the posture that God should hold daily in our walk with Him.

But how do we lift up God? Well David tells us how to do that. The second part of verse 1 says “I will bless thy name forever and ever.” How do we bless God? By going down on bended knees. That is our posture in our daily walk with God. He goes up as we go down! In other words when we bend down we are acknowledging our lowliness while at the same time acknowledging his loftiness and greatness. By doing this He draws us unto Himself. This is why James said ““But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”James 4:6-10 The best way up is to always go down first through humility’s way and allow God to draw us up and near unto Himself.

In verse 2 David says that “Every day I will bless thee.” Putting God in His rightful place and getting ourselves in our rightful place must be done on a daily basis. So I challenge you to go down on bended knee today, humbling yourself under God’s mighty hand that He may be exalted and draw you unto Himself. By doing so, men and women everywhere “Will take knowledge that you have been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13
