Called To Be Saints

Romans 1:7

Paul is writing what is considered by many as his masterpiece to the church in Rome. Wait a minute! There is a church in Rome? Looking at how this one time great civilization had fallen into such a state of depravity and debauchery, it’s hard to imagine that God would have a church in Rome. But yet he did, and because of it we have one of the most in depth description of the gospel and it influence on the lives of those who believe.

As Paul addresses this Church in his introduction he reminds the Roman believers of their calling. They are called to be Saints. Right in the midst of all the corrupting influences, they were called to be salt and light. The Holy calling, which is what the word saint means, was to be one that was separate from the lifestyles that was defining Rome, while at the same time defining what is meant to be a follower of Jesus. The Greek word is Hagios which means to set apart for God. In others words we consecrate ourselves to be exclusively his, accomplishing his will and purposes in this life as he is preparing us for the eternal life with him.

Today you and have have this same calling. America today has in many was become like Rome of old. We too, which at one time was a great civilization, have now fallen into a state of depravity and debauchery, and yet the challenge remains for you and I to live holy and separated lives unto God. You mean that God has a church in America? Yes he does! And just as that ancient church in Rome was a model influence in its day we too have that same obligation before us.

I offer up a reminder and a challenge for us today in our present culture from Peter who spent his last days in Rome before being put to death for his faith in Christ.

First the reminder. Peter said in 2 Peter 2:9 “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”

Peter is reminding the believers scattered abroad that they are a nation of God’s people who are to demonstrate light, holiness, and a unique lifestyle that bring praise to God.

Second the challenge. Peter is encouraging the believers to stir up their pure minds and to remember that they have been purged from their sin. Then he challenged them by saying “Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:” 2 Peter‬ ‭1:10‬

We too have that same calling and election!

Is is possible to have a church in America that is separate and holy unto the Lord? Yes not only is it possible, but it is also a necessity and God has brought us into his kingdom for such a time as this. In times like these may we be up to the challenge before us and by Gods grace represent him well in a fallen culture.

God bless and I love you all!
