Matthew 2:11; 2 Corinthians 9:15
Today is known as Black Friday. It is called Black Friday because it is the first day of the Christmas shopping season and retailers offer special reduced prices. The hundreds of millions of dollars spent and gained on this day alone is somewhat hard to comprehend during this commercialized season. I call it a commercialized season because what is suppose to be one of our more spiritual seasons of the year has been overshadowed by the chaos and havoc of trying to get that right present for that special someone.
There is that special someone to be honored and remembered during this time and that person is God’s Son, Jesus Christ. It is the time of year when we celebrate His incarnation, the word becoming flesh, which was the first step in our redemptive history. Just as there was no room in the in for Mary, Joseph, and the soon to be born Jesus, today there doesn’t seem to be much room for Christ in our culture. Christmas is now just referred to as a Holiday and instead of saying Merry Christmas, people greet one another with seasons greetings or happy holidays. The birth of Christ is being ignored and the spirit of Christmas has been overshadowed by the spirit of the age.
As we enter into this Advent Season in a couple of days, it is a good time to start preparing our hearts to give Christ our best in worship and proclaiming the “Glad tidings of great joy unto all men.” Just as we desire to purchase that perfect present for that special someone, let us seek to be as the wisemen and bring our best gifts unto Jesus and presenting them at His feet with our hearts bowed before him. Let us on this Black Friday start out in the right spirit so that it may carry us all the way through Christmas and unto another special Friday in the spring, that GoodFriday on which He that was placed in a manger was put on a cross to complete the redemptive work of God for our salvation. “Thanks be unto to God for His unspeakable gift!”
