Being the First and Thirteen

I have always loved birthdays.  Growing up, we didn’t make a huge deal out of them because there were 4 of us.  I occasionally had a friend or two come for a sleepover, maybe we got a German chocolate cake and the cousins came to help eat.  Some people don’t even want to recognize their birthdays. But you know what, that day that you call your birthday is the very day that God decided he wanted you to be born.  Think about it. He picked the day and the time you would enter this world.  What better reason to celebrate!

My first granddaughter came to us pre-packaged.  She was 3 months old when I first met her and Lord knows I was smitten.  The circumstances didn’t matter nor the biologics.  She was going to be my number one GRAND.  Oh, how my heart burst with joy every time I held her.  We played.  We sang.  We dressed up and danced. We cooked.  We read.  We baked.  And the list goes on.

God decided she would be my first by making my son to be her daddy after the fact.  The only daddy she has known.  Now she is turning 13 and I can’t believe where the time has gone.  She’s no longer that little baby that stole my heart.  She a beautiful young lady that is kind-hearted and generous.  She was my perfect first Grand.  Now I have 5 more perfect Grands.  I am one blessed Grandma.

So, when a birthday rolls around, regardless of the circumstances, celebrate to the fullest because that is the day GOD chose for YOU to be born.  It’s a glorious day.

Psalm 139:13-18

13 For you created my inmost being;    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;    your works are wonderful,    I know that full well.15 My frame was not hidden from you    when I was made in the secret place,    when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;    all the days ordained for me were written in your book    before one of them came to be.17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God!    How vast is the sum of them!18 Were I to count them,    they would outnumber the grains of sand—    when I awake, I am still with you.

What is a more perfect gift than having God choose your birth day. Happy Birthday to my first who is turning thirteen. Thank you God for my gift and thank you for letting me share God's gift to our family. Happy birthday my First One.

You are so correct Dale. The title of Grandma, grandpa, is best ever.
