Are You a Salty Christian?

Give me a handful of salty peanuts and a Coke in a little glass bottle and just for a few minutes all is right with the world. If you’ve never tried them together then don’t knock it. I’m just saying. Now, you might ask what does salty peanuts and a Coke have to do with being a salty Christian? You have to understand what salt is and what it is used for.

Salt is a resource/mineral, occurring naturally in certain parts of the world. It is mined, refined, and sold throughout. It comes in many forms and has different flavor profiles based on its area of origin; Black salt, Mediterranean salt, pink Himalayan salt, Sea salt, Kosher salt, Flake salt, Red salt,… It is used to preserve or cure certain types of foods such as meats, fish, and pickles. But, it is also used to flavor foods in the cooking process.

I am a salt-aholic. I love salt in all forms; coarse salt on a good ole’ grilled steak, or added to butter for homemade popcorn. Himalayan salt can be used to finish off a plate of pasta with shrimp, and you can’t make homemade ice cream without rock salt to chill the mixture to perfection. You can’t eat homegrown tomatoes and cucumbers without some salt and pepper. But like most anything, too much salt and the dish is ruined. Not enough salt and the dish is flat.

Now this brings me back to the question, “Are you a salty Christian?” Have you been refined? Have you been seasoned with a steady diet of God’s Word? Have you been tested and found to be well seasoned in Bible doctrine?

Colossians 4:6 ... Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will know how to answer each one.

Above my kitchen window are the words “Season Everything with Love”. I should add “and a little salt”. My grandma always added a pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar to her cooking. If we have a little saltiness and season all that we say and do with love(sweetness) then, we are well on our way to being a well-seasoned, Salty Christian.

Thank you for this devotion. We don’t have a lot of salty Christians, fear keeps them from sharing their salt. They are not trusting in God as he does his work in the lost person before they meet .

Thank God for making the road before us, Amen
