Angels Among Us

When you hear the word Angel, you immediately think of a heavenly being with wings, that goes around doing good works, at God’s bidding.  It’s also one of those words that is sometimes used as an endearment or as a descriptive word for someone’s actions. I immediately think of Alabama’s song “Angels Among Us”.  I have never not believed in angels and I am not sure how or why I came to this belief.

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines angel as, “literally, a messenger; one employed to communicate news or information from one person to another at a distance. But appropriately, a spirit, or a spiritual intelligent being employed by God to communicate his will to man. Hence angels are ministers of God, and ministering spirits. Hebrews 1:4.”  The angel, Gabriel, in Luke 1: 26-38, delivered a message to Mary, who was betrothed to Joseph and she even had a conversation with him. Later, another angel announced to the shepherds that The Savior, Christ the Lord, had been born in Bethlehem. Then “there was a multitude of heavenly host praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those whom he is pleased.” Luke 2:13-14.

Angels are basically divided in two group, fallen and unfallen.  Fallen angels come under the group that were cast out of heaven with Lucifer. Unfallen angels are labeled as cherubim, seraphim, and heavenly host. Got Questions tells us that there are both good and evil angels.  Yep, you heard right.  Did you forget that Satan/Lucifer himself was an angel.  I kind of did. We often refer to them as demons.  Lucifer turned his back and chose not to follow God’s commands and there was a multitude that went with him.  It’s difficult to remind ourselves that not all angels are out to be God’s messengers. That is one way to discern the difference.  Is the message you receive following God’s word/example?  I’m choosing to focus on the ones delivering God’s message.

As we wind up this year, look for the angels around you, both earthly and heavenly.  What messages are they delivering to you?  Please visit this link to read more about angels.  It’s fascinating. https://www.gotquestions.org/angels-Bible.html

"Angels Among Us" is not necessarily a Biblical song but still one of my favorites.  Enjoy Alabama’s “Angels Among Us”.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_4Xfj2LRSA  then to round out the Christmas season, listen to “Angels We Have Heard on High”, believed to have been written by monks, maybe over a thousand years ago. Though, it has had its tune changed over the centuries, I'm sure, it is still well steeped in theology and truth.  This version is one of my favorites.  I’m not quite ready for Christmas to be over.  Enjoy Pentatonix with their version of “Angels We Have Heard on High”
