“For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:”
1 Peter 2:15
A lot of times arguments are not won with words when it comes to converting sinners to Christ. But many have come to Christ by the good conversation of a holy life. Peter is telling us here that there is no value to endless debates. In many situations it does more harm than good. The purpose of God’s people in the word is to bring light and not the darkness of confusion. In fact when it comes to convincing or correcting a fool the book of Proverbs tells us that you just simply can’t do it! Even Jesus said that we are not to Give not that which is holy unto the dogs or Cast your pearls unto the pigs. (Matthew 7:6)
Peter also tells us that the way for a wife to win her husband to the Lord is with The hidden person of the heart…the imperishable beauty of a hidden and quiet spirit. (1 Peter 3:4) It is often said that Actions speak louder than words. We as God’s people should seek to save by serving and convince by our convictions that speak more volumes than a momentary debate. When we are put into situations where we have to give a reason why we believe, then we are to do it as Peter said With gentleness and respect. (1 Peter 3:15) To convince an Atheist on atheistic grounds is to bring more confusion. To witness to a fool on his foolish grounds will bring instability more than stability. To convince a religious person that their goodness and works aren’t enough only makes him or her work harder.
No, the purpose of Christianity is to bring more light than heat and the only way to do that is to Let our light so shine, that they might behold our good works and glorify our Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16) Let us seek to not to curse the night, but light a candle!
