A Cure For a Troubled Heart

2 Corinthians 4:8; John 14:1-3

We live in a troubled world and are definitely experiencing troublesome times. Creation is groaning, we as God’s people are groaning, and the Holy Spirit groans within us. Paul said “We are troubled on every side…” It seems that everywhere we turn there is someone hurting, dying, crying, and in despair. All of these things are happening in one of the most advanced and well supplied countries in the world.

“We are troubled on every side…” How can this be? I believe it’s because we have turned away from God and turned too secular ideas and a secular way of living. Out of our abundance we have learned to depend on ourselves and not lean on God. As a nation we are “Rich and increased with good and have need of nothing.” Revelation 3:17 But this overabundance has created boredom, emptiness, loneliness, and because of our materialistic mindset there has been an increase in greed and debt as the American dream has become the desire to be wealthy, healthy, and secure instead of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As a result, people try to escape this boredom, emptiness, loneliness, and debt through alcoholism, drug addiction, divorce and remarriage, pornography, and a whole host of things that spiral down into depression and despair which leads to overdose and death.

“We are troubled on every side…” The troubles that Paul faced came from opposition to the Gospel. They came from without, and Jesus said that this was to be expected. The troubles in our culture today are coming from within because we have rejected God and the Gospel. The acceptance of secular ideas has created a vacuum that has sucked in all kinds of ideas and philosophies that are atheistic and humanistic which has made America “become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.” Revelation 18:2 Perilous times have come and are becoming more of an excepted and normal way of life among many. But we as God’s people are and should be greatly grieved.

Let not your heart be troubled…” Jesus brings these words of comfort to his disciples on the night before he died on the cross. His disciples were troubled about many things and Jesus discerned this. He tries to comfort them by letting them know that he is going away to prepare a place for them. What kind of place is going to prepare? It is a place where “God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” Revelation 21:4 Once this place is completed, he is going to come back again and receive his church unto himself that where he is they shall be also.

“Let not your heart be troubled…” Jesus gives his disciples then and to us now A cure for a troubled heart. There are so many things in the world that is beyond our control, and we have to through prayer put them into God’s hands while we practice patience, stay focused on the Lord, and persevere in prayer. In these words of comfort, we find a Peace, a Place, and a Promise. These are the prescriptions for curing a troubled heart in our world today.

Read Luke 21:26-28 and look up the Hymn “Jesus Is Coming Soon” and let the word of Christ and the Hymn calm your troubled soul.
